Hydropower is the number one renewable energy source and the backbone of Swiss electricity generation. Alpiq has been using this energy source for more than 100 years with our own run-of-river, storage and pumped storage power plants in Switzerland.

Hydropower will become even more important in the future: It is carbon-free, efficient and highly flexible, and as such the ideal energy source to enable further penetration of intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar.

Alpiq participates in two of the largest pumped storage projects in the Alps, which will provide an additional 1,200 MW of capacity within the coming years.
