How we work

Policy

We provide information and guidance to decision-makers and practitioners

Informing decision-making

The International Hydropower Association (IHA) offers evidence-based information and guidance to decision-makers and practitioners among industry, governments and financial institutions.

We advance strategies for integrating hydropower with fast-growing variable renewables.

Our engagement informs national and global policy-making and helps to improve the investment climate for renewable and sustainable hydropower projects.

Advocacy and partnerships

We maintain strong partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders including governments and multilateral institutions, and civil society, finance, scientific and academic sectors.

This increases awareness of renewable hydropower’s importance to sustainable development, as well as the unique storage and flexibility services it provides to support the clean energy transition.

Promoting coordinated action

We advocate for sustainable hydropower in international platforms and initiatives, including those convened by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Our aim is to promote coordinated action, cooperation and dialogue on hydropower’s role in the clean energy transition.

Highlighting the synergies between hydropower and solar power, IHA has collaborated with the World Bank as well as the Natural Heritage Institute (NHI) to promote the deployment of hybrid systems.

IHA is also a leading member of the REN Alliance, together with the World Bioenergy Association (WBA), International Geothermal Association (IGA), World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) and International Solar Energy Society (ISES).
