Global Hydropower Day - Fish Conservation
EDP has modernised five dams in the Douro River, with an investment of €1.9m, allowing fish to pass through them.
No changes to installed capacity or generation were needed for the change, with the aim being to improve the ability of the fish to pass through the dams.
The new equipment means there are less operations stops, with shorter durations and automatic alarms. These measures allow the protected species to reach upstream areas that they haven’t before.
The species protected include the European eel, Mugilidae, Brown Trout, Iberian barbel, Northern straight-mouse Nase, Calandino, Northern Iberian chub and the big-scale sand smelt.
