Upper Hunter Hydro

Upper Hunter Hydro is an Australian renewable energy company founded in 2022 by Australia’s 29th Prime Minister and current President of the International Hydropower Association (IHA), the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull AC, and hydro engineer and past President of the IHA, Roger Gill.

Upper Hunter Hydro is developing two large pumped hydro schemes in the Hunter region of Australia: the Glenbawn and Glennies Creek Pumped Hydro Projects. These projects present a unique opportunity to leverage existing dams as lower reservoirs to generate clean, dispatchable electricity needed to firm renewables as part of Australia’s energy transition. The projects are also expected to create new economic opportunities for the local community and workforce as coal mines and coal fired power stations in the region reach the end of their lives.

The team at Upper Hunter Hydro brings a lifetime of experience in clean energy development and are committed to delivering the deep energy storage required for a net-zero world.

Malcolm Turnbull, Director of Upper Hunter Hydro commented: “To meet the challenge of global warming the world needs to urgently transition to clean energy. We have all the resources needed to achieve this change - sun, wind and water. But one resource is limited and shrinking, and that is time.

"Pumped hydro is a proven technology that has been deployed around the world for over a century. The more clean but variable power that is developed through solar and wind, the more pumped hydropower will be required to provide balance and flexibility when the wind doesn’t blow, and the sun doesn’t shine.

"While batteries play an important role and are essential for storage diversification, sustainable hydropower can be the backbone of national strategies to build thriving, low-carbon economies bolstered by clean, renewable energy.”
