The agreement to triple renewables at COP28 in Dubai represents a step change in the world’s journey to a clean, secure and just energy future. It also marks the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era. It represents the first time the technology’s positive impact and climate saving potential has been recognised by all nations. This can’t be delivered without the help of sustainable hydropower which provides the backbone to the renewables sector. As well as generating around half of all the world’s renewable energy, hydropower supports wind and solar by storing excess capacity – water, wind and sun gets the job done!
What did we do at COP28? Malcolm Turnbull, President of IHA and former Prime Minister of Australia, led the IHA delegation with over 50 bilateral meetings with Heads of State, Ministers, senior officials from banks and influencers like King Charles of the United Kingdom, Baroness Scotland of the Commonwealth, Catherine McKenna, former Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Canada, Al Gore, former Vice President of the United States, Bill Gates, former founder of Microsoft among others.
Highlights included:
Student Energy and International Hydropower Association sign an MOU to power youth integration into the sustainable hydropower community.
The Hydropower Sustainability Alliance has signed an MOC between Bursa Malaysia, Sarawak Energy and the International REC Standard Foundation to offer renewable energy certificates on Bursa Carbon Exchange.
Meeting with Itaipu to consider hosting a joint sustainable hydropower roundtable at the Clean Energy Ministerial/G20 in 2024.
The International Hydropower Association (IHA) represented its members at this historic event advocating for sustainable hydropower through our partnership with the Global Renewables Alliance and other stakeholders at COP28. Our advocacy activity at COP28 focused on the promotion of the Bali Statement as a follow up to the San José Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower. As the world's largest renewable energy, sustainable hydropower is an essential part of the solution to climate change and with its pollution-free electricity, it is providing a pathway to a sustainable future. Sustainable hydropower provides energy security to the world, supporting the rapid growth of solar and wind power, thanks to the flexibility and storage it offers power grids that are increasingly reliant on variable power supplies.
