The ignored crisis within the crisis – the role of Pumped Storage Hydro in a reliable energy system at COP29
Date: 16 November 2024
Time: 9:00-10:15
Thematic Day: Science, Technology and Innovation / Digitalisation
Location: Global Renewables Hub (C11/C9)
As countries plan for their net zero targets, substantially more long duration energy storage will be needed to support the integration of variable renewable energy. Various storage technologies exist or are being developed. Of particular importance is pumped storage hydropower (PSH), a mature and proven technology that already provides around 90% of installed electricity storage globally.
This session is designed to help us understand the importance of PSH to the grid and how it can be harnessed to drive forward the clean energy transition. Panelists will describe existing projects and share their insight into what the future for pumped storage may hold, if the right policies are put into place.
They will also discuss how PSH can help the Global Storage Target and the various activities and policy documents that will culminate in the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower 2.0 in Paris in September 2025.
Moderator: Malcolm Turnbull, President of IHA and former Prime Minister of Australia
Panellists:
- Julia Souder, Long Duration Energy Storage Council
- Parveen Nanda, Greenko
- Kristian Ruby, Eurelectric (tbc)
