The importance of sediment management for sustainable reservoir and river development
Find out more about the World Bank’s Global Sediment Management Study at the webinar on 'The importance of sediment management for sustainable reservoir and river development’.
Date: 29 November 2021
Time: 11am-12pm GMT
Background
When water flows from rivers into hydropower plants, sediment is carried downstream and can accumulate at the bottom of hydropower reservoirs. This can decrease the efficiency of hydropower projects.
Sediment management is the practice of avoiding and mitigating the impacts of sediment accumulation in hydropower projects.
Overview
At this webinar, a summary will be provided of the World Bank’s Global Sediment Management Study which seeks to provide an overview of problems related to non-existent or insufficient sediment management practices.
Other topics discussed at the webinar will include the importance of process knowledge and sediment management for sustainable reservoir and river development, based on experience in research projects and practical applications. The webinar will also cover the need for policy change to incorporate sediment management into governmental and operational frameworks.
The webinar is delivered by the World Bank in partnership with the International Hydropower Association (IHA).
