Charging a new era in US hydropower: Rye Development joins IHA membership

IHA welcomes Rye Development to its membership this week. Rye Development is at the forefront of a new era in U.S. hydropower, driving pumped storage projects that will enhance the nation’s energy grid with reliable, long-term renewable energy storage solutions.

“Pumped storage hydropower is key for securing our clean energy future,” says Paul Jacob, CEO, Rye Development. “These facilities not only offer reliable energy storage for intermittent resources but also strengthen communities through sustainable investment.”

With a portfolio of 10 pumped storage projects representing more than $10 billion in investment, Rye is helping to build a cleaner, more resilient grid. Among these projects is the Lewis Ridge Pumped Storage Project in Kentucky, which recently secured an $81 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy. This project repurposes former mine lands to create critical energy storage infrastructure, contributing to both environmental sustainability and economic revitalisation.

Eddie Rich, CEO IHA, celebrated the addition of the new American members, “having Rye Development as part of the IHA membership is recognition of pumped storage hydropower’s global renaissance. Rye Development are is paving the way for others to follow.”
