Leading Southeast European electric utility PPC Group joins IHA membership

PPC Group (Public Power Corporation Greece PPC S.A.), a leading generator and supplier of electricity in Greece and Romania, is the latest to join the IHA. With a firm commitment to sustainable energy development, PPC Group is now the largest clean energy company in South eastern Europe (SEE) with 4.7 GW production capacity from renewables, 2.8 GW under construction or ready to build, and a total 20 GW RES portfolio gross pipeline. PPC’s Group RES capacity includes 3.2 GW of large and small hydro plants. Additionally, PPC Group believes in the long term flexibility offered by pump hydro and their role in the future power system. For this reason it is assessing new opportunities including opportunities in its ex-lignite areas.

Alexios Paizis, deputy CEO of PPC Group for conventional generation and in charge of PPC’s large hydro activities, commented:

“Through sustainable hydropower, we unleash the power of nature, the silent force propelling us on our journey towards a greener future while safe guarding the environment for generations to come. PPCs’ desire is to join forces and voices with associations that share the same vision towards sustainability. We are eager to work with IHA to advance the development of hydropower in our region and Europe.”

Hydropower plant Ilarionas, is the latest addition of the PPC Group’s Hydropower portfolio, part of the hydro scheme of the Aliakmon River consisting of several large plants (Ilarion, Polyfyto and Assomata) and an open loop pumped storage hydropower plant (Sfikia). The combined installed capacity of these plants is equal to 951 MW.

Eddie Rich, CEO IHA, celebrated the addition of the new European members: “Having PPC Group as part of the IHA membership is a recognition to pumped storage hydropower’s renaissance in Europe. By leading the way for sustainable hydropower in SEE, PPC Group is paving the way for others to follow.”
